Start point matters in large complexes

A representative coordinate is useful for consistent comparison, but it may be near the center, management office, or mapped address. Measure again from the actual building entrance and the gate used for daily travel.

Station entrance is not the platform

A walking estimate usually ends at a station entrance. Large stations can require additional underground walking, security gates, and transfers. Add platform-access time when comparing door-to-train commutes.

Check the route, not only the distance

Traffic signals, bridges, underpasses, steep slopes, narrow sidewalks, and winter conditions can make a short straight-line route inconvenient. Accessibility needs require a separate elevator and barrier-free route check.

The line and direction determine usefulness

A nearby station may still require multiple transfers or offer infrequent service. Compare peak-hour frequency, last train, crowding, transfer walking, and the destination side of the platform.

A repeatable commute test

• Start at the exact building during the normal departure time
• Use the actual gate and station entrance
• Time the walk, waiting, transfer, and final walk separately
• Repeat in the opposite direction and during rain if possible
• Compare bus, bicycle, and driving alternatives for service disruption
